In October 2000, passenger traffic rose in all regions. Growth was highest in Asia/Pacific (+7 percent), followed closely by Europe (+6 percent), the Middle East and Africa (+4 percent each), North America (+2 percent) and Latin America/Caribbean (+1 percent). The new runway continues to propel Madrid-Barajas (+17 percent) as the fastest growing airport among the top 30 airports worldwide, followed by Rome-Fiumicino (+9 percent), Singapore-Changi and Hong Kong (+8 percent each). Traffic declined at several major U.S. airports, primarily due to reduced air service frequencies. Among them: Miami (-1 percent), Atlanta (-2 percent), Chicago-O`Hare (-3 percent) and Detroit (-4 percent). Atlanta-Hartsfield with 6.6 million passenger handled remains the world`s busiest airport.
Cargo handled rose in the Middle East (+6 percent), Asia/Pacific and Europe (+5 percent each) and Latin America/Caribbean (+3 percent), but it was down in North America and Africa (-1 percent each). FedEx hub, Memphis, with 215,000 metric tonnes of cargo handled, is followed closely by Hong Kong with 212,000 metric tonnes. Dubai, Beijing and Oakland, the fastest growing cargo airports, had identical growth rates of 17 percent.
