Working holiday rules in UK improved for travellers from Australia, Canada, Japan and New Zealand

The loosening of working holiday rules in the UK has been welcomed by STA Travel, a leading youth travel company which says it will boost interest in long haul travel for young adventurers. The legislative changes would allow 18-30 year old Australians to work an d holiday in Britain for up to two years -a year more than the previous scheme- and would provide further incentive for Australians to head to the UK.

The new ‘Tier 5’ Youth Mobility visas will also cost less, at just around half the original cost, and for the first time travellers will have no time restriction on how long they work whilst on holidays. STA Travel currently sends approximately 30,000 students and young professionals on working holidays each year, and it expects that number to rise under the new visa legislation. “This new visa structure is fantastic for young Australians. They can now work longer and see more of the world while they build their resumes and make lasting connections with the destinations they visit,’’ said STA Managing Director, David Burns. Under the new visa scheme, young Australians will now be able to work in any field, except that of a professional sportsperson, set up a business or work as a Doctor in Training. The scheme is also valid to travellers from New Zealand, Canada and Japan.
