Andersen<.>, the professional services firm and pre-eminent provider of hotel industry performance data outside North America, published a Special Report on providing service in the hospitality industry to the disabled. The report is based upon recently published best practices identified by a group of UK hoteliers, and offers guidance on how to improve customer service, accessibility and employment opportunities for people with disabilities, their careers and families.

The report has been prepared with the assistance of IndividuALL, a new organisation created as a result of the work of The Hoteliers' Forum following the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act. As the former President of the Hoteliers' Forum, which was originally set up under the auspices of the Prince of Wales' Advisory Group on Disability, HRH The Prince of Wales has agreed to continue in this role for IndividuALL.

Many of the UK's major hotel chains are members of IndividuALL, and strategic partners include Andersen, the British Hospitality Association and Caterer & Hotelkeeper magazine.

Having focused on the importance of recognising different disabilities and the associated needs, the report highlights best practice in five key areas as identified by IndividuALL.

Culture

Staff

Communication

Facilities

Customers

IndividuALL has commissioned a training CD-ROM to assist businesses promote these five building blocks of best practice. The 'welcoming disabled guests' CD-ROM illustrates the common issues associated with serving disabled customers and produces a randomly generated test which, on passing, enables the user to obtain a personalised certificate. This certificate will be accepted as evidence in the Excellence Through People process supported by the BHA.
