September airfares, responding to the unprecedented decline in passenger traffic, fell 19 percent. That drop in ticket prices, coupled with a passenger traffic decline of 32 percent, resulted in revenues falling by 45 percent, said ATA Chief Economist David Swierenga. September`s revenue results are a vivid reminder of why emergency economic stabilization assistance was vital to the continued viability of the airline industry.
The report, includes yearly and monthly average coach-class and first-class ticket prices, as well as average ticket prices overall. Information in the report is compiled from actual prices paid by consumers, which are provided by air carriers to ATA.
Airfares reported to ATA in cents per passenger per mile are normalized for a 1,000-mile trip. Data is gathered for more than 85 percent of all domestic air travel. First-class and coach-class average fares and year-over-year price change information, as well as comparative data for the current and previous years, are included. The one-way average fare information is based on a 1,000-mile trip and does not include aviation taxes.
Price changes are updated monthly and are compared to the same period of the previous year. Because of strong seasonal differences in airfares, month-to-month comparisons are less useful than comparisons for the same period a year earlier.
The Air Transport Association of America, Inc. is the trade association for leading U.S. airlines. ATA members transport over 95 percent of all the passenger and cargo traffic in the United States.
