United Nations' Secretary-General Kofi Annan visited the World Tourism Organization's Madrid headquarters on Tuesday (April 9) during his stay in Spain for the UN's Second World Assembly on Ageing.

He was greeted by WTO<.> Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli, senior officials and Mr. Juan-Jose Guemes Barrios, Secretary-General of Tourism for Spain, representing the Spanish government. WTO's Secretary-General stressed the growing importance of travel among senior citizens, a trend recognized by the staging of a WTO seminar on 'Ageing and Tourism' the previous day. Mr. Frangialli also informed Mr. Annan of the latest situation in the international tourism sector, following the September 11 attacks on the United States of America and the prospects for recovery this year.

Special attention was given in the discussions to the UN backed International Year of Ecotourism 2002. The Year's main event is the "World Ecotourism Summit", to be held by WTO, the Canadian Tourism Commission and UNEP in Quebec City (Canada) from 19 to 22 May this year. Some 800 delegates, among them Ministers from 25 countries, have already confirmed that they will attend.

Mr. Annan was pleased to learn that the Summit will not only underline tourism's role in promoting sustainable development but will also emphasize the important role tourism can play in the fight against poverty.

In conclusion, both Secretaries-General recalled the close links existing between their two institutions since the creation of WTO as a related agency of the UN and executing agency for projects carried out under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
