Special attention was given in the discussions to the UN backed International Year of Ecotourism 2002. The Year's main event is the "World Ecotourism Summit", to be held by WTO, the Canadian Tourism Commission and UNEP in Quebec City (Canada) from 19 to 22 May this year. Some 800 delegates, among them Ministers from 25 countries, have already confirmed that they will attend.
Mr. Annan was pleased to learn that the Summit will not only underline tourism's role in promoting sustainable development but will also emphasize the important role tourism can play in the fight against poverty.
In conclusion, both Secretaries-General recalled the close links existing between their two institutions since the creation of WTO as a related agency of the UN and executing agency for projects carried out under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
