Aviation Authority to tender airport security to private sector

Private security companies will take over the policing of Greece`s 39 airport<.>s in the near future, according to a recent report in the respected Athens daily newspaper Vima. The step could save the state hundreds of millions of drachmas.
But before such a major change can be instituted, the government must enact the proper legislation, which is expected to be tabled in parliament next month. With the changes, as per the newspaper report, the private security force would cost the state (Civil Aviation Authority) between 3.5 billion and 4.0 billion drachmas annually. Money to cover the expense will come from the CAA`s airport tax fund.
Changes expected include a complete about face in the way the airport, aircraft and passengers are checked. The role of the police and the CAA at airports will be cut to a minimum. Their major task will be to inspect the services bring offered and carried out by the private security company or companies selected.
Private security would be responsible for checking all luggage, passenger body checks and passengers` card checks for entrance into all airport areas other than visitors` waiting areas.
Also, according to the newspaper report, the private security company would be selected through a public tender that stipulates all bidding parties have a very high level of professionalism. Special airport training, however, will be supplied by the Civil Aviation Authority and the Greek police.
