Flyglobespan is to expand its Stansted operation with the launch of a daily service to Athens. This will be flyglobespan’s third daily overseas service from Stansted as the web-based, low fares airlines continues its UK expansion from its strong Scottish bases of Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Last November they launched Stansted’s first daily service to Tenerife and have also been flying from there to Geneva daily since last December. The daily Athens service will launch in May and will initially run until October.
As well as these new Stansted routes, flyglobespan have continued to grow their Glasgow and Edinburgh programmes with a much expanded 2006 campaign – most notably the launch of the UK’s first ever daily low fares service to Florida when their Glasgow –Sanford flights begin in June.
The company, head-quartered in Edinburgh, have grown rapidly over the past three years to become Scotland’s leading low fares airline. Last year they flew close to 1,500,000 customers and expect that to rise to almost 2 million this year.
Chairman Tom Dalrymple is delighted at this latest addition to their Stansted operation. “Greece is a fairly new market for flyglobespan,” he admitted, “But we recently launched weekly flights to Athens and Heraklion from Glasgow and initial interest has been very good.”
“A daily service is a much bigger challenge but it gives travellers much more flexibility. I am sure there is a big demand for this route from the Stansted catchment area and our prices will be very competitive. We look forward to growing this and our other Stansted routes and, hopefully, further expanding our presence here.”
Stansted Airport’s Business Development & Planning Director, Nick Barton welcomed the new flyglobespan route, saying: “The announcement from flyglobespan is more great news for Stansted and the region. It gives the airport direct access to one of Europe`s most vibrant capital cities which will bring further choice to our passengers in the East of England and the wider south-east. We wish flyglobespan every success as they continue to grow their route network from Stansted.”
