New equipment to fight ice and snow at Moscow Domodedovo Airport

The fleet renewal will make it possible for Domodedovo Airport to provide services for quality handling of aircrafts and cleaning the airport’s pavements in the coming autumn and winter more efficiently

Moscow Domodedovo Airport has invested 350 million rubles in purchasing de-icing machines and equipment for cleaning the airfield. In the run-up to the autumn-winter period, which will last from October 2012 to March 2013, in total, it was acquired 14 additional emergency vehicles of the world’s leading manufacturers. All equipment purchased meets Euro 4 and Euro 5 international environmental standards.

Domodedovo Airport operates the most up-to-date equipment. In November-December 2012, the de-icing fleet consisting of 24 vehicles will be reinforced with 4 state-of-art de-icing machines Elephant Beta, the popular lineup by the market leader Vestergaard. The equipment will be used to de-ice the aircrafts with the engine running. This technology has already proved itself in airports of Canada, USA and Europe, in Russia it was first adapted and applied by the experts of Domodedovo.

Handling aircraft with the engine running can reduce the waiting time and time for taxiing an aircraft after handling, as well as reduce the consumption of de-icing fluid, and make the use of deicing fleet more efficient. To apply this technology, which was tested in February 2012, Domodedovo Airport is using two special sites, which are located at the ends of the runway No. 1. Each of the two sites can receive 2 aircrafts alternately. By the next autumn-winter season, the airport will reach full production capacity and will be able to handle three times more aircrafts at each site.

This coming winter Moscow Domodedovo Airport is going to use for cleaning the airfield of snow and ice 43 units of equipment, including 2 new snowblowers Schmidt Supra 5001, 4 jet sweepers Schmidt CJS-914 Super II and TJS630, and 4 anti-icing distributors Schmidt Stratos B60-36. Some new models are featured by high performance and power: for example, the new auger rotary snowblower Schmidt Supra 5001 can remove up to 5,000 tons of snow per hour with a throw distance up to 40 m.
