Sir Michael Lickiss, chairman of VisitBritain – the organisation responsible for marketing Britain overseas and England to the British – visits the Port of Dover on 14 September . During the day visit he will tour the port and cruise terminals and meet with other senior tourism officials to see how Dover welcomes visitors to Britain and discuss opportunities for VisitBritain and CruiseUK to work with the port in the future.

CruiseUK is a VisitBritain initiative encompassing all cruise-related organisations in Britain. It aims to increase the number of visitors taking a cruise to the UK and acts as the first point of contact for developing the cruise industry to Britain`s ports.

Sir Michael said: “With the number of passengers taking a cruise rising 9.3% in the past year, cruise companies are looking to satisfy their client`s demand for new and unique destinations outside of the traditional regions of the Caribbean and Mediterranean. CruiseUK aims to increase Britain`s share of this growing market and I am delighted to have the opportunity to tour the Port of Dover and learn more about how CruiseUK can promote Britain as a world class destination.”

Sir Michael will commence his visit by touring Cruise Terminal One, where he will meet with Les Godly, Cruise Manager, and Noel Glover, Head of Cruise Operations. The terminal is an atmospheric conversion of Dover`s former Marine Railway Station and Sir Michael will explore some of the facilities available to the 15 million passengers who travel through Dover each year.

He will then tour the Costa Atlantica Cruise ship, which at an estimated cost of £240 million and with second-to-none, on-board facilities, is an important lure for tourists considering the UK as their cruise destination. He will be shown around the ship by Paul Ellerby, MD of Costa Cruises UK.

Sir Michael will complete his visit to the port by attending a presentation given by Deborah Jarrett of Cruise Connections. She will explain more about the company`s project to promote both Dover as a cruise port along with the attraction of Kent as a destination.
