Tourism in an environment that`s less than clean is worthless. The non-profit, non-governmental organisation Clean-Up Greece presented its efforts for a better environment and its future plans at a recent press conference.

In the course of 1999, Clean-Up<.> Greece entered the Internet domain, organised the first Eco Festival at the national gardens and began publishing the Clean-Up Greece (Ellada Kathari) magazine.

It was recognised by the UN as a member of the Mediterranean Action Plan and received the congratulations of President Costis Stephanopoulos through the pages of the new periodical. Additionally, it began cooperating with European groups through the Environment without borders programme.

As for 2000, it plans to conduct treeplantings in conjunction with schools, companies and other bodies, as well as run seminars on ecological technology. In March, Clean-Up Greece intends organising a presentation entitled Environmental management and environmental quality assurance ISO 14000 for hotel units. April will see an environmental forum while a whole host of events – including concerts, the Eco Conference, ecological education, an informational programme for children and a book exhibition – are planned for May, the month which hosts World Environment Day.

Throughout the summer volunteers will clean up beaches, rivers, lakes and public gardens. September, the month in which Clean Up the World Day is celebrated, will see informational programmes carried out in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras. Finally, in December, Clean-Up Greece will recognise those companies which have lent their support to protecting the environment.
