The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) and the International Tourism Exchange ITB Berlin (8 -12 March 2006) have signed an agreement with the aim of expanding joint activities for trade fairs and conventions.

Jana Dewitz, marketing director of Messe Berlin, is pointing out: This new cooperation as a marketing instrument of cross selling is an important building block for the collaboration between partners of the service industry.

The collaboration is useful to increase the range of services on offer as well as to concentrate resources to market the products and services of both partners. In this area the activities of large aviation alliances have already paved the way.

In a declaration during the signing of the agreement ASTA Executive Vice President William A. Maloney said: With globalisation on the march there is an ever-growing need for traditional segments of the tourism sector to offer increasingly internationally-oriented customers exactly the right products to suit their particular market. Even if it sounds trivial: `Think global – act local` remains the watchword, especially where global tourism is concerned.

Dr. Martin Buck, Director Travel & Logistics at Messe Berlin, reiterated that the collaboration with ASTA was an important milestone en route to putting Messe Berlin`s international strategy into effect. Buck: In order to expand beyond the limits of our traditional base we need international partners with the right expertise. This is a necessity, as our potential on home ground is limited. With ASTA we are glad to have found the ideal partner to accompany us along the road ahead.
