The seventh annual world conference of the Global Aviation Information Network (GAIN) ` the industry-led program to facilitate the collection, analysis and sharing of safety information worldwide ` will be held on September 28-30 in Montreal, Canada, at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure Hotel, 900 de La Gauchetiere W., Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The conference is an open forum for aviation safety professionals to continue their efforts to improve aviation safety worldwide through information collection and sharing. This year`s theme is Implementing Safety Management Systems Processes and Tools.

The conference will focus on the concept and implementation of Safety Management Systems (SMS) that document a process of how airlines manage the safety process. The SMS process is similar to the methods airlines use to monitor their maintenance and financial operations. Canada was the first country to mandate SMS for its airline industry, but carriers in the United States and Europe are working on similar programs.

Conference attendees will participate in sessions that:

  • Demonstrate tools and processes that support safety management through the collection, analysis and sharing of aviation safety information;
  • Explore the cost reduction benefits of an effective safety and quality program;
  • Explore evolving strategies to implement safe operating procedures or just culture in the collection and sharing of safety information throughout the world;

  • Discuss approaches for improving safety and quality management in an uncertain economic environment; and

  • Expand their collaborative networks to improve aviation safety.

In addition, the GAIN working groups and the Government Support team, which consists of governments around the world involved in GAIN that can directly help aviation operators improve safety, will provide reports and prsentations.

Participants will include approximately 250 safety professionals from 30 countries, including representatives from 30 airlines, airframe manufacturers, avionics and safety software developers, employee groups (pilots, mechanics, air trafficcontrollers and flight attendants), civil aviation authorities, accident investigation boards, air traffic control service providers, and military aviation and university groups involved in aviation safety.

Conference sponsors include Airbus, FedEx Express, Alaska Airlines and Air Canada. In addition, Boeing, the Airline Pilots Association, the Air Transport Association, Aviation Daily, CEFA Aviation, BLR Group, Flightscape, JetBlue Airways, SAGEM, Airclaims, PolyVista, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Teledyne Controls, Regional Airline Association, and Aviation Quality Database are providing support.
