Planning a trip can be very exciting, especially if you’re going somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit. However, the thought of packing for the trip is sometimes scary enough to dampen your excitement because you have no idea where to start. But, with the right guide, you never have to feel worried about packing for a trip ever again.

This post is a guide for packing, and it contains a template that will make packing for trips easy forever!

Advantages of making a packing list
The first reason you should make a packing list is that it makes it easy to pack and prepare ahead of time. Also, with a packing list, it is also guaranteed that you won’t forget any important items such as your passport, medical items, toiletries, or even a jacket or raincoat.

Things to consider before making a packing list
Before you proceed to make a packing list, you need to have made several decisions. These decisions include where you’re traveling to, when you’re embarking on the trip, as well as what you’ll be doing on your trip. Once you have these three answers, we can proceed to the next step.

What is the weather expected to be like? Would you need raincoats, thick clothes, or summer wear?

How long will you be staying? This affects how many toiletries and clothing items you’ll need to pack.

How many people will you be packing for? Yourself alone? Your kids, partner, or travel partner? Your packing can be simple or complex depending on who you’re packing for.

Your means of transportation is also another consideration because the way you pack when traveling by plane will be different from when you’re traveling by train or bus because some things can’t go on a plan or would have to be packed separately.

Develop your packing list template

1. Synopsis
The first step to developing your packing list template is to answer the questions we asked earlier, which are the location and duration of your trip, as well as what you’ll be doing, and who you’re traveling with.

2. Categorize your list
You’ll need to break the list into several categories such as documents, clothes, toiletries, technology, food (if necessary), and outdoor equipment (for camping)

3. Fill out the categories
Now that you have the categories all spelt out, begin to write down all the things you need to travel with under each category. It is okay to write as many things that come to your head, even if you might later decide to leave them behind.

4. Organize based on priority
There’s a high chance that you don’t need all the things on the list you have written, and you might be unable to travel with all of them. This is where organization comes in. Begin the list again putting the most important items first. These are items you can’t do without. Then, the less important items should come last.

5. Remove the items you can do without
The final stage is to remove all the clothes and items you can do without from the list, especially those that take up a lot of space. If you still have some space, you can think of something important you overlooked in the beginning. Once you have reviewed this list several times and you’re sure about everything on it, you can get packing.

Packing efficiently is the key to having a great trip.
