Making the most of your retirement by getting out!

Staying young at heart is one of the secrets to living life to the fullest. Update your wardrobe with fun, colorful pieces that fit and look good. Who says you have to wear frumpy clothes? Buy yourself a nice pair of jeans, a cute short dress, and some new sophisticated shoes.

You started working at the age of 14, doing babysitting jobs, graduated from high school and college and have worked every day since. Now you’re newly retired and you have nothing but time ahead of you. Transitioning from the hustle and bustle that the 9 to 5 job brings to the serenity of retirement is a big adjustment for many seniors.

Routine
Ditching your normal routine is no easy feat. The good news is you don’t have to, nor should you. Routine is something that keeps you going. You don’t have to get up at 6:00 A.M. however, you shouldn’t waste away the rest of your life. Select the time of day that best suits your needs. Then, wake up, have your breakfast and plan the day's events.

You’re only as old as you feel
Staying young at heart is one of the secrets to living life to the fullest. Update your wardrobe with fun, colorful pieces that fit and look good. Who says you have to wear frumpy clothes? Buy yourself a nice pair of jeans, a cute short dress, and some new sophisticated shoes.

Go on vacation to some place new
You and your spouse worked endlessly to put away extra money for your retirement. Well guess what, it’s here. It’s time to start living. Book a vacation to a place new to both of you. Pack up some light summertime clothing and beachwear. If you can’t find the right styles in your local store, try online. For instance, if you want a two-piece suit but want to avoid the low-cut bottoms, there are many high-waisted bathing suits available. Combine that with a pair of open-toe flip-flops, a coverall and a cute tote and you’re ready for the beach.

Take up a hobby
During your working years, you barely had any time left over at the end of your day. Now, you have all the time in the world and it’s perfect for taking up a hobby and pursuing your passions. Gardening, birdwatching and book clubs are a few of the popular hobbies that seniors have. Other suggestions include starting a work from home business, walking, bike riding, hiking, photography and genealogy.

Socialize
Retirement doesn’t mean that you close your door and now live inside. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. You can be anywhere at any time. If your children are having birthday parties for their own children across the country, you can be there. Stay connected to those you love and get out and mingle with other people in your age group. There are many clubs devoted to seniors only. Check out a few until you find the one that best suits you and your spouse.

Stay healthy
Now more than ever before you want to keep your health in check. The good news is there are several ways to promote it. First, continue to eat the right foods. There’s nothing wrong with overindulging once in a while, however, for the most part, maintaining a healthy diet. Secondly, exercise is vital at any age, and even more so once you reach retirement. After the age of 60 it becomes much harder to maintain muscle mass. Keeping fit will mean that you need to workout for 30-40 minutes two to three times weekly.

Volunteer work
It’s always gratifying to help others in need. As a retiree with time on your hands you have the ability to do volunteer work. You can work one day a week in a hospital, at a food pantry, soup kitchen, or volunteer to read to children. It will keep you connected to the outside world and make a difference in another person's life.

You’re retired. You have the rest of your life to do the things you enjoy and spend quality time with your family. Book a vacation to a tropical island or travel by car across the states.
