Unlimited data plan alternatives for overseas travel

The biggest downside of using an unlimited data plan are of course that it it’s expensive. That’s not to say that there aren’t cheap unlimited data plans out there, but you will really have to do your research to find them.

When it comes to traveling overseas and being able to have a reliable form of phone communication, you primarily have two options: you can either plan ahead and customize you current phone to adapt for overseas travel, or you can bite the bullet and pay full price for an unlimited data plan with your current phone carrier.

The biggest downside of using an unlimited data plan are of course that it it’s expensive. That’s not to say that there aren’t cheap unlimited data plans out there, but you will really have to do your research to find them. Don’t just bite at the first offer you find or you will risk overpaying. While many popular networks offer unlimited data plans (for example, AT&T sells an international package with enough data to last about a week for $120, and Verizon Wireless charges $10 a day for roaming in many countries), there is probably a cheaper option out there. Here are some suggestions.

Use a SIM card
A great, cost-effective option for having a solid data plan when you travel overseas is purchasing a SIM card to install in your phone. This is fairly easy to do, and you can probably buy one as soon as you land at your destination airport. They techs there will even be able to help you install it.

SIM cards are great because the process is simple, and will save you a lot of time in the long-run. With a local SIM card, you’re guaranteed not to have to worry about roaming charges or paying for an overseas or unlimited data plan.

Furthermore, when you purchase a SIM card, you’re able to tap into the networks of the region you’re traveling to, which will ensure you have consistent service, and save you the hassle of paying for a phone plan.

When you get a new SIM card, your contact number will change, but you can get around this blip by downloading an international messaging app, like Whatsapp, Skype, or Rebtel.

Purchase a temporary phone
If you’d rather not deal with the headache of setting up your current phone for use overseas, a simple and straightforward option is to purchase a temporary phone that’s pre-loaded with data and a set service plan. Similar to a SIM card, if you go this route, you won’t be holding on to your usual phone number and contact information, so you’ll have to let friends and family know about this change. It’s also wise to use international messaging apps on these types of phones (if they support them), to make your money go farther.

At the end of the day, it’s important to have a communication device in case of emergencies, and for safety, but is it that big of a deal if you’re not able to check Facebook from your phone? The memories you make from your travel experience are much more important than being able to scroll through Instagram on command. Keep this in mind as you navigate overseas phone plan options.
