Annual IATA Conference for Airline Insurance March 2004, Munich

The annual IATA Conference for Airline Insurance, which was held on 8-9th March 2004 in Munich, was met with great success, as 200 participants and 40 airlines attended it.

The first day of the Conference started with the welcome addresses by Thomas Windmuller, SVP IATA and Eugene Hoeven, IATA Director.

In his keynote address, which marked the opening of the conference, Dr Karl – Ludwing Kley, CEO, Lufthansa, stated that, there are four categories of risks facing aviation: event risks, business model risks, financial market risks and conventional risks. For the airlines the way out of all the above risks is to look after themselves and for the State, society and airlines to realise their responsibilities.

He stressed that security issues will be important for the macropolitical agenda for the next 30-50 years and that insurers cannot solve the problems of the airlines, but can be of great assistance”. Finally, he said that the ooperation between airlines and insurers, after a short period of bumpy relationship between the two industries after the 9/11 events, has returned to normality, that is, it is currently as it was before 9/11.
