A committee of senior EIBTM management studied detailed submissions from ten European cities. Tender deadline was the end of December 2001.
Clarification is now being sought on certain aspects of each of the five remaining tenders.
"We have been very impressed with the bids and are extremely grateful to all those cities that had spent so much time and effort in preparing their representations", said Tom Nutley, Managing Director of Reed Travel Exhibitions, who own EIBTM.
"We know our decision will cause disappointment for some, but they can be comforted by the fact that this was a close run race, with formidable competition.
"The committee had decided on certain vital criteria, such as the amount of exhibition space, the number, availability and quality of hotel rooms and wide ranging transportation links. This helped us to decide on the cities that should be included in the final shortlist.
"The next stage will be to visit some or all of the venues. This will be dependent on the answers received concerning our specific enquiries."
The final decision, expected to be announced this summer, will be made in conjunction with exhibitors, industry associations and EIBTM's new Advisory Council of senior industry members.
"The presentation's have been creative and exciting. We look forward to discussing their proposals in greater detail with those cities still in the running," said Mr. Nutley.
