Hacienda Don Carmela is certified Under PRTC’s Agrotourism Program

Hacienda Don Carmelo houses nearly 50 horses on its farm, most of which are born or raised there, as well as others brought from Europe.

Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), Ingrid I. Rivera Rocafort, has presented the owner of Hacienda Don Carmelo, Melba Figueroa, with a PRTC Agrotourism Program certification. Hacienda Don Carmelo, located in Vega Baja, places an emphasis on the equestrian art of breeding and training horses.

“PRTC enthusiastically welcomes this new attraction into our Agrotourism Program that will offer a new alternative to tourists and locals, looking to enjoy agriculture within the framework of nature at Hacienda Don Carmelo,” said Rivera Rocafort. “It is gratifying to have this magnificent Hacienda. In addition to its agricultural qualities, it has added to the livestock industry, which has positively impacted the country’s economy,” explained the director of the tourism company.

Dr. Myra Comas Pagan, Secretary of Agriculture, said, “The Agrotourism Certification Program has continued to contribute to the overall economic development of the country.”

Hacienda Don Carmelo houses nearly 50 horses on its farm, most of which are born or raised there, as well as others brought from Europe. The property contains the various needs of breeding and training horses (stables, grazing area, training area, feeding, bathing, etc.), all of which follow regulated standards.

Moreover, Hacienda Don Carmelo is a company seen on display at the Puerto Rican Equestrian School of Art. This area compliments other sectors developed on the farm by hosting special events.

Through federal grants, the Hacienda has received hundreds of children from camps, which has resulted in “The Horse World” tour, in which an educational presentation is shown on the different stages of a horse’s life.

“We are very proud of Melba Figueroa in achieving this certification for Hacienda Don Carmelo. This certification provides our city great opportunities that will expand tourism locally and nationally. Our city has great natural resources, such as Tortuguero Lagoon and our beautiful beach harbor. These unique resources found here distinguish us as a people, and this certification given to the Hacienda provides us the opportunity to strengthen our image as the world’s tourist city,” said Marcos Cruz Molina, the Mayor of Vega Baja.

La Hacienda Don Carmelo is located on Highway 670, Algarrobo sector Km. 8.2 in the town of Vega Baja.
