InterContinental Hotels Group, Latin America, yesterday, announced that the venerable InterContinental Managua is going to be re-branded as the Crowne Plaza Managua, effective January 1st, 2004.

The pyramid-shaped hotel is one of the city`s key landmarks, recognized as one of the few structures left standing after the devastating earthquake of 1982, which destroyed most of the city.

The hotel is ideally suited for Crowne Plaza`s global corporate positioning strategy as `The Place to Meet` due to its location directly adjacent to the country`s premier state-of-the-art convention facility, with almost 14,000 square feet of meeting rooms and capacity for up to 2,600 people.

The convention facility is one of the largest and most modern in Central America, and provides an ideal platform for IHG`s recently-launched initiative establishing the Crowne Plaza brand as the definitive global leader in small to mid-scale business meetings, as well as larger conventions.

Our responsibility for each property is to ensure its long-term success, says Alvaro Diago, Area President InterContinental Hotels Group Latin America. The property is truly suited for Crowne Plaza`s new global meetings strategy; hence, this is the ideal time to re-position the hotel so that it can capitalize on what we view as a one-of-a-kind convention facility in that market.

The re-branding of the property also affords IHG the opportunity to have three of its key brands represented in Managua – InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn.

Beyond the expansive meeting facilities, the Crowne Plaza Managua will continue to feature 150 guest rooms and 38 suites, complementing recent renovations to the lobby and guest rooms, along with every modern amenity.

The re-branding of the property in essence brings another first-class hotel chain to Managua, adds Diago. Our portfolio in the city is now more diversified than any other international hotel chain in the market, and symbolizes our confidence in a market in which we have had a significant presence for more than 30 years.
