May tHPI: Hotel prices down 20% in major US cities for Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day is a great time for a big city break this year, with savings as high as 24 percent in popular cosmopolitan destinations such as Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Chicago.

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are headed out of the city and into the sun. Hotel search trivago reports hotel prices down in numerous US metropolitan cities and up in popular beach destinations over this patriotic holiday weekend that marks the beginning of summer. Thus, Memorial Day is a great time for a big city break this year, with savings as high as 24 percent in popular cosmopolitan destinations such as Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Chicago. Meanwhile, hotel prices in beach and party destinations (such as Las Vegas and Palm Springs) see increases of up to 45 percent over the holiday weekend.

This May, hotel prices are up by an average 11 percent across Europe, and as high as 38 percent in popular summer tourist destinations. For the Cannes International Film Festival in Cannes, France, which runs from May 15th-26th, average hotel prices shoot up to an astonishing 247 percent on the most expensive day of the festival. These are the findings of the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) reported monthly by hotel comparison website, trivago.com.

Below is a list of cities where hotel prices drop significantly over the holiday. Included are the percentage savings of a hotel room booked over May 24th-27th, versus any other period this month.

Hotel prices increase by up to 38% across Europe as summer season begins
Hotel prices have increased in Europe by an average of 11 percent in comparison to last month, according to the tHPI, based on the 50 most popular European cities on trivago. One night in May will cost an average of $169, compared to $151 in April.

Venice is the most expensive destination this month, where hotel prices have increased by 38 percent to an average of $369 per night. Other significant increases can be found in Prague (up 34 percent to $194), Istanbul (up 29 percent to $246), and Budapest (also up 27 per cent to $125).

Cannes Film Festival: Hotel prices increase by up to 247%
Hotel prices have increased by an average of 164 per cent during the Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 15th-26th. One night during the festival will cost an average of $441, compared to an average of $168 in the weeks preceding and succeeding the event. The most expensive day to book is Thursday, May 16th, when one night will cost visitors an average of $582. This is a 247 percent increase from the days leading up to and following the festival.
