PGA Catalunya Resort brings Tee It Forward initiative to Spain

USGA and PGA of America backed programme will help golfers have even more fun on Spain’s No.1 golf course.

GIRINA, SPAIN – PGA Catalunya Resort, near Barcelona, Spain, has announced it will be one of the first golf destinations in Europe to launch the USGA and PGA of America-backed programme, Tee It Forward,  this summer.

The initiative, which already has the backing of over 2,000 facilities in America, and is supported by 18-time Major winner, Jack Nicklaus, has been created to grow the game of golf and encourage newcomers, by giving them the opportunity to play golf courses at a length best aligned to their average driving distances.

Playing from the new Tee It Forward tees, all golfers will now be able to experience PGA Catalunya Resort’s Tour Course and its world-renowned Stadium Course –venue of two Spanish Opens and host of The European Tour’s Qualifying School Final Stage– at a level aligned with their ability, giving them better enjoyment of the game, and a new golfing experience.

Backed by new participation figures released by the Spanish Golf Federation (Real Federacion Espanola de Golf), PGA Catalunya Resort believes the introduction of the Tee It Forward initiative will encourage a greater number of youngsters and women to take up the sport, as well as re-engage and tempt back occasional players.

Miguel Girbes, Golf Director at PGA Catalunya Resort, said: “We believe this programme can help interrupt a trend that has seen the number of registered golfers in Spain drop to levels previously seen in 2006. It will also be an attractive concept for visitors who may have previously seen our Stadium Course as too great a challenge for their ability.”

Commenting at the launch of Tee It Forward in America, Jack Nicklaus said: “I love the game of golf but I will be the first to tell you that there are things about our game we need to improve.

“All of us deeply involved in the game constantly encourage golfers of all skill levels to play the proper tees, but too often golfers want to bite off as much of the golf course as they can. What ends up suffering, is their scorecard and their overall enjoyment.”
