Slight decrease in the number of rooms in the Canadian pipeline

At the end of the third quarter of the calendar year, the Canadian hotel development pipeline includes 216 projects comprising 24,462 rooms, according to the September 2009 STR/TWR/Dodge Construction Pipeline Report released this week. This represents a 1.8-percent decrease in the number of rooms in the pipeline compared to August 2009 and a 5.3-percent increase in the number of rooms in the pipeline compared to September 2008.

Among the Chain-Scale segments, two segments reported increases in the number of rooms in the In Construction phase for the month. The Upscale segment increased 10.3 percent to 2,118 rooms and the Luxury segment reported a 4.6-percent increase to 682 rooms. The Upper Upscale segment experienced the largest decrease of rooms in the In Construction phase, falling 83.3 percent to 185 rooms, followed by the Midscale with Food and Beverage segment (-10.5 percent to 504 rooms), the Economy segment (-7.1 percent to 79 rooms) and the Unaffiliated segment (-6.7 percent to 1,384 rooms).
