Employees at Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers are rising to a new challenge in October and November to celebrate having helped raise US$10 million for UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) though the Check Out for Children fundraising initiative.

The Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers has hosted a series of fundraising events starting from 15th Oct to 15th Dec, 2004 as part of the Check Out for Children Challenge – a special campaign to raise enough money to immunize thousands of children in the region against the major childhood diseases that are preventable by vaccination.

The cost of immunizing each child includes: buying vaccines, training vaccinators and volunteers, cold storage and transport of vaccines to ensure they arrive safely and conducting important community awareness and education campaigns.

Two million children die every year worldwide from preventable disease and immunizing children, particularly in emergencies, is among the most cost-effective preventive public health measures.

Staff at hotels across Asia Pacific region are aiming to raise a minimum of US$100,000 for UNICEF immunization program through a series of sports-related activities throughout the two months (15 October to 15 December, 2004).

“We are very proud to have helped reach the US$10 million milestone through the ongoing Check Out for Children campaign,” said Ananda Arawwawela, Managing Director of Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers. “Now we are hoping to give it an extra boost through a series of fundraising campaigns.”

The Check Out for Children program – which encourages guests to make a US$1 donation to UNICEF as they check out of the hotel – was launched in the Asia Pacific region in 1996 by UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Sir Roger Moore. The money is used to support UNICEF’s life-saving immunization against the six major preventable childhood diseases.

“It is thanks to the dedication and motivation of Starwood employees that we have been able to raise such an impressive sum for UNICEF,” said Miguel Ko, President Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc., Asia Pacific. “I am delighted that we are rising to this new Challenge.”
