For the New Year’s Eve weekend report, cities across Europe such as Prague (268 percent increase), Edinburgh (196 percent increase), Venice (130 percent increase) and Amsterdam (119 percent increase) have significantly increased hotel prices compared to their average price for December. The UK has likewise experienced a jump in prices. Cities such as Manchester (29 percent increase) and London (22 percent increase) reported the highest premiums in the UK for New Year’s Eve – while the Irish capital, Dublin (22 percent increase) also experienced a significant price increase. These are the findings of the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) prepared each month by the hotel price comparison website trivago.co.uk.
In December, Christmas hotel prices have fallen across Europe by three percent to £93 (November 2011: £96). The index is therefore 2 percent higher than the previous year (December 2010: £92). On New Year’s Eve weekend, many cities in Europe are reporting significant price increases. Travellers to Prague in December will experience an average price of £84 for one night in a standard double room; however during New Year’s Eve will be charged a whopping £309 (268 percent increase). In Venice (December 2011: £114, New Year: £264) and Amsterdam (December 2011: £106, New Year: £233) reported price increases of 130 percent and 119 percent above the December average will occur during New Year’s Eve. Even travellers in European cities such as Barcelona (December, £88, New Year: £171, 94 percent increase), Vienna (December: £112, New Year’s: £214, 91 percent increase) and Rome (December: £98, New Year’s Eve: £156, 59 percent increase) will pay higher accommodation rates for the holiday weekend. Budapest (December: £57, New Year: £89, 55 percent increase), Paris (£137 in December, New Year: £204, 49 percent increase), Istanbul (December: £87, New Year: £112, 28 percent increase) and London (December: £159, New Year: £194, 22 percent increase) are also among those reporting great hotel price increases during the New Year’s weekend.
Edinburgh over New Year’s Eve, 196 percent more expensive
While prices across the UK are down in December compared to last month (December 2011: £87, down 3 percent, November 2011: £89) specific cities have recorded price explosions over the New Year’s Eve Weekend. In Edinburgh, one night in a standard double room over New Year’s costs 196 percent more than the reported December average (December: £102, New Year: £302). In Manchester, reported rates have increased by 29 percent (December: £97, New Year: £125) and in Glasgow, by 13 percent (December: £79, New Year: £89). London (December: £160, New Year: £195) and the Irish capital of Dublin (December: £80, New Year: £98) on the other hand, are both reporting price increases of 22 percent.
Blackpool and Sheffield offer favourable December prices
Despite the increase in prices over New Year’s Eve weekend, many cities are still reporting lows compared to the overall monthly average for the UK this month. The most significant price decrease can be found in the tourist destination of Blackpool – where one night in a standard double room costs only £59, 32 percent less than the UK December average of £87- as well as the city of Sheffield (£67) where prices are also down this month by 23 percent. Cities such as Birmingham (£74) and Leeds (£75) have also experienced price decreases between 13 – 15 percent; while the Welsh capital of Cardiff (80 £) has reported a decrease of 8 percent. Newcastle (£82), Bristol (£83) and Liverpool (£83), are among those reporting the lowest decreases this month, between 4-5 percent.
