The state of the travel industry and its outlook for the future will be among topics explored at the 19th Annual Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Reno December 9-11, Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt said yesterday.

Tourism is Nevada’s No. 1 economic engine and it benefits everyone directly or indirectly, Hunt said. This year’s Governor’s Conference will examine the current state of the travel industry, its outlook for the future, and new ways to market tourism attractions. As lieutenant governor, Hunt chairs the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT), which produces the Governor’s Conference.

William Norman, president and CEO of the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA), of Washington, D.C., the nation’s chief tourism industry trade organization, will address the conference on the state of travel December 10. Following Norman’s keynote address, Peter Sealy, founder and CEO of Los Altos Group management consultants of Los Altos, Calif., will talk about the future of tourism.

Two popular speakers returning this year are Frank Fahrenkopf, president and CEO of the American Gaming Association on the State of Gaming in the United States, and William Eadington, professor of economics and director of the Institute for the Study of Gaming at the University of Nevada Reno, on the State of the Economy. Eadington also will moderate a panel on the State of Indian Gaming.

The conference, which draws about 1,000 delegates, will be at the Atlantis Casino Resort and the newly expanded Reno/Sparks Convention Center next door. Both are 5 minutes from Reno/Tahoe International Airport and less than an hour from Lake Tahoe.

Much of the conference will be devoted to adventure, the main theme and the title of the gathering, Putting the Adventure Back in Tourism. Adventure speakers include Lisa Odynski of the 2002 U.S. Olympic Team women’s giant slalom snowboard on Going for the Gold and panels of experts on public lands as adventure venues and marketing adventure to the travel and news media.
