In following Fulbright’s guiding principles, Sheree M. Mitchell intends to focus on outreach to potential program participants from the interior of Portugal as well as first generation college students and members of underrepresented ethnic and cultural groups.
LISBON, PORTUGAL – Sheree M. Mitchell, internationally-known for her unique contributions to the tourism industry in Portugal, has recently been appointed to the Board of Directors of the United States-Portugal Fulbright Commission. Mitchell is the president and founder of the upscale tour operator, Immersa Global.
With over 20 years of experience in the tourism industry, Mitchell began by designing and executing tailor-made language and cultural-based programs abroad for US academic institutions. Her specialty later became white glove leisure travel for high-net-worth individuals seeking once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Over the past eight years, Mitchell has leveraged her expertise and high level connections to create off the-beaten track programs in the interior of Portugal which has led to significant economic impact in rural communities.
As the direct beneficiary of extensive study abroad combined with language and cultural immersion, Mitchell was honored to receive the prestigious appointment from Randi Charno Levine, US Ambassador to Portugal, which stated: “I believe Ms. Mitchell will be an important advocate of international educational exchange and I am sure that her involvement will support the critical mission of the US-Portugal Fulbright Commission”.
The Fulbright Commission was created in 1946 by Senator Fulbright with a mission to encourage “public diplomacy” in a post WWII era. The lawmaker strongly believed that the formation of a new educational exchange program would promote “mutual understanding between nations and between communities”.
In following Fulbright’s guiding principles, Mitchell intends to focus on outreach to potential program participants from the interior of Portugal as well as first generation college students and members of underrepresented ethnic and cultural groups.
The US-Portugal Fulbright Commission is led by the executive director, Otília Reis, with the support of ten board members represented by five nationals from Portugal and five from the United States. Mitchell is the most recent American addition.
