£10m scheme highlights growth of tourism on the Thames

While the announcement from Transport of London focuses all eyes on the river for 2013, the leisure and business tourism opportunities have not been highlighted outside the daily commute.

Leading River Thames sightseeing cruise operator, City Cruises, is urging the Mayor to consider tourism as a greater part of the £10million scheme that aims to double the number of passengers travelling along the Thames over the next seven years.

While the announcement from Transport of London focuses all eyes on the river for 2013, the leisure and business tourism opportunities have not been highlighted outside the daily commute.

The scheme aims to increase the number of passengers to 12million, and also includes plans for three new piers on the river.

Rita Beckwith, CEO of City Cruises and Chairman of UKinbound comments: “Increasing the number of passengers to 12million will not be possible without the consideration of tourism on the Thames. We want to know that Londoners are being encouraged to enjoy the Thames for leisure journeys, as it really is the best way to see the sights of the Capital.”

Kyle Haughton, Managing Director of City Cruises, adds: “When asked yesterday via Twitter what Boris Johnson recommended for a ‘day out in London at Easter’ he suggested taking a boat to Greenwich as one of the options. We would like these tourism activities to be addressed as part of the scheme.

“As the No.1 tour operator, we offer a range of products to ensure visitors and Londoners can see the Thames day or night, with a variety of different entertainment and dining on board. We have recently added to our senior management team as we expect 2013 will see an increase in sales during this busy period.”
