A recent study conducted by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics showed that the number of tourists who visited Egypt in the last four years stood at 24 million. The total number of tourists surged up from 4.7 million tourists in 2001 to 5.2 million in 2002, 6 million tourists in 2003 and then to 8.2 million in 2004.



Head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics Abu-Bakr Al-Gindi said according to the study of the rate of increase in Arab tourists numbers in the last four years ranged between 18.5% and 20.9% while the rate of European tourists ranged between 67.4% and 73%, and American tourists between 3.5% and 5.4%.



The total number of Arab tourists amounted to 4.9 million; European tourists, 16.9 million; and American tourists, 868 thousands. The number of tourist nights spent over the last four years hit 198 million. The tourist nights amounted to 30 million compared to 33 million in 2002, 53 million in 2003 and 82 million in 2004.



The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased from LE 380 billion in the fiscal year 2002-2003 to LE 380 billion in the FY 2003-2004, up by 4.3%, Al-Gindi said.



The contribution of processing industries to GDP went up from LE 70.7 billion to LE 73.4 billion, up by 3.7%, Al-Gindi added. Suez Canal revenues increased by 9%; whole sale and retail trade went up by 4% and real estate activities, 3.6%.
