New Mexico Clean & Beautiful, a division of the New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD), earned national recognition for its efforts in 2005 at Keep America Beautiful’s (KAB) 52nd annual national conference in Orlando, Florida.

KAB President G. Raymond Empson presented New Mexico Clean & Beautiful with one of six Diamond Level State Affiliate Recognition Awards, which honors state affiliates “that have …successfully initiated state affiliate guidelines in promoting KAB’s mission in their respective states and offered program support to local affiliates five years in a row. The Diamond Level winners are KAB’s shining stars. These affiliates lead by example, providing guidance and mission-consistent programs that can be used at a local level.”

Created through the Litter Control and Beautification Act of 1985, the New Mexico Clean & Beautiful program’s mission is to reduce litter to the maximum practical extent and raise overall litter awareness statewide.

In addition to receiving the KAB award, New Mexico Clean & Beautiful executive director Joseph Lobato was named to KAB’s Board of Directors representing state leaders for a three-year term through 2008.

“We commend Joseph for his honor, New Mexico Clean & Beautiful for its hard work and all New Mexico communities for their efforts in keeping the Land of Enchantment a showcase for themselves and their visitors,” NMTD Secretary Michael Cerletti said. “This award from Keep America Beautiful is a tribute to all those efforts.”

In addition to New Mexico Clean & Beautiful, Diamond Level honors went to similar organizations in Mississippi, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas and Georgia.

Keep America Beautiful, Inc. is a national nonprofit education and community improvement organization whose network of nearly 1,000 affiliate and participating organizations engages individuals in programs that prevent litter and reduce, reuse, recycle and properly manage waste materials.
