Directline Holidays reports Greece as #1 holiday destination this summer

Directline Holidays believes that the success of Greece is down to a combination of consistently good weather, high accommodation standards and affordable prices due to financial instability over the past 12 months.

Online travel agent Directline Holidays reports Greece as its top-selling destination for summer 2013, with continued strong demand for Turkey – the second favourite. While the Balearic Islands have seen a slight dip in bookings, Spain overall remains in third position due to the enduring popularity of the Canary Islands, and Portugal enjoys a 50% increase in bookings to secure fourth place.

While Greece retains its top spot with almost 25% of all summer holidays sold by Directline Holidays, demand for Turkey has doubled year on year. Tunisia is another strong contender having experienced significant growth since 2012 while the popularity of Malta continues.

Directline Holidays believes that the success of Greece is down to a combination of consistently good weather, high accommodation standards and affordable prices due to financial instability over the past 12 months.

Maria Whiteman, CEO of Directline Holidays, says: “UK travellers are extremely resilient and are simply not prepared to let political unrest overseas get in the way of the British institution that is the annual summer holiday, hence why we continue to see demand for Egypt and Turkey. We always follow the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s advice, which currently does not advise against travel to the tourist areas of Turkey and Egypt. We’ve found that our customers understand tourist areas often remain unaffected. Far from shying away from their favourite holiday destinations, UK travellers want to show their support by continuing to visit them.”
