A new study from independent cruise comparison website CruiseCompare.co.uk has revealed that British cruisers consume the same amount of alcohol throughout the duration of a two week cruise, as they would in over eight weeks at home.

As part of ongoing research into the holiday habits of British cruisers, an independent cruise comparison website conducted a study of 1,203 cruisers aged 25 and over in a bid to discover the average amount of alcohol units consumed on a two week cruise compared to when at home.

According to the new research, conducted by CruiseCompare.co.uk, the average cruiser consumes the same number of units in a two week-long cruise holiday as they would over eight weeks at home.

Initially, when supplied with a guide of units in different alcoholic drinks to aid their estimation of intake, the respondents were asked ‘How many units, on average, would you normally consume on a two week cruise?’ According to the results, the average number of units consumed amongst cruisers was ‘95’.

In contrast, when the respondents were then asked the same question, but this time with regards to how many units they had when at home, the majority, 48% said they had 15 units a fortnight, on average.

When asked to estimated how much alcohol they consumed in a week when back home in the UK, the average amount stated was ‘12’; equating to around 96 in an eight week period.

Therefore, according to the study, throughout the duration of a two week cruise, the average cruiser consumes the same amount of alcohol as they would in eight weeks at home.

Furthermore, when the respondents were asked if they consume the same drinks on a cruise as they do at home, two thirds, 67%, answered ‘no’. When these respondents were asked why this was the case, the majority, 43%, said it was because of the ‘variety offered onboard’.

The study found that the most common reason for the respondents consuming more units of alcohol on a cruise than at home was in order to ‘relax on holiday’ with almost three quarters, 73%, stating this is why they indulged a little more.

The study into alcohol consumption on cruise holidays was conducted with an aim to highlight how many units of alcohol British holiday makers consume whilst away compare to when at home in the UK.

Danielle Fear
, Managing Director of CruiseCompare.co.uk, said the following on the findings, “This was an interesting study to conduct, and I am sure many will see the results as quite shocking. As long as the holidaymakers are careful and drink responsibly, then there is no harm in having a few alcoholic drinks when on holiday. However, it is a little concerning that cruisers are cramming eight week’s worth of alcohol units into a two week cruise!”

She continued, “Part of the excitement of a holiday is letting go of inhibitions and enjoying things that you don’t on an average day. However, with this being said, consuming too much alcohol can be dangerous, especially when on a cruise liner in the middle of an ocean.  We all know a hangover can ruin a nice day and who wants to wake up on holiday with a hangover?”
