Budapest Airport renovates the runways of Ferihegy for 800 million HUF

Budapest Airport, the operator of Ferihegy Airport commenced reconstruction works today involving the complete renovation of both runways at the beginning of next week. Maintenance works will start on 27 October and are foreseen to last until the second week of November. Settlements adjacent to the airport can expect temporarily heightened noise burdens during this period.

BA made its decision for aviation safety reasons, to ensure full compliance with international regulations and in order to be able to provide a higher quality of service to its airline partners. The maintenance works include the cleaning and repainting of the basalt concrete runways, which have a total area of about 400 000 square meters, as well as the complete replacement of the airfield ground lighting system.

The cost of the renovation works is just over 3 million euros, nearly 800 million forints.
The reconstruction of runway I. is planned for 27 October to 1 November and the renovation of runway II. is expected to last from 3 to 7 November. This is the ideal period for such works since the summer peak season has ended, but the contractor will not yet be hampered by the cold winter weather.

During the closures, all traffic will be shifted to the other runway. Thus, in the first phase of the works, residents in Rakoshegy in district XVII. of Budapest and Ullo, whilst during the second phase, Vecses and district XVIII. can expect higher than usual noise burdens for a few days.

“I believe the renovation of the runways is a very significant step and one that could not be delayed any further,” said BA CEO Jost Lammers. “It will enhance aviation safety at Ferihegy and enable us to provide better service to our partners.”

“We are aware that our neighbors are exposed to higher than usual noise burdens during runway closures. We therefore tried to ensure the strictest possible compliance with deadlines on the part of the contractor. We sincerely apologize to the residents of affected settlements, primarily Vecses and Rakoshegy, for the temporary inconvenience and ask for their kind understanding."
