The European Commission has decided to allow the Italian government to finance the extension of infrastructure at the Tortoli-Arbatax airport. The measure intends to enhance the regional development and communication of the province of Ogliastra. Furthermore, the new infrastructure will enable Tortoli-Arbatax airport to comply with current airport safety requirements.

Tortoli-Arbatax is a small publicly owned regional airport (42 655 passengers in 2004) located in the province of Ogliastra at the eastern coast of Sardinia. The area is isolated and suffers from limited communications, not only with the surrounding area but also between the local population centres.

Currently, Tortoli-Arbatax Airport is managed by a private company Gearto S.p.a. under a concession agreement expiring on 30 March 2024. The Italian government intends to provide € 3,171,000 from the state budget to finance additional investments aiming at upgrading and extending the airport runway, passenger terminal, perimeter road and installations.

The Commission found that the proposed measure is in line with the Community rules as the financing concern works on essential infrastructure and it is set to achieve a clear objective of general interest without leading to undue distortion of the market.
