The European Commission gave the green light to Belgian start-up aid to promote the development of Antwerp Airport as regional airport. In order to increase the number of passengers travelling through Antwerp Airport, aid is granted to air carriers starting new lines or providing additional rotations in departure from this regional airport.

Air carriers with a valid operating license may get a three year start-up aid for opening new lines or operating additional rotations on existing lines from Antwerp Airport. The degressive three year aid is paid per passenger and per take-off and landing. In order to be selected, an air carrier must first provide a business plan, which demonstrates that the new line will be viable and is not in competition with existing lines or high speed rail links.

The total aid is estimated at € 1 372 093 for one airline, or at € 4 116 279 for three airlines. It is capped at a maximum of 50% of total annual eligible costs and 30% of total eligible costs. Eligible costs cover marketing, advertising and installation costs.
