Cosmos continues its monthly guide to Greece

Millions of holidaymakers from across the world head to Greece every year to enjoy its Mediterranean climate, golden beaches and rich cultural heritage. But tourism in Greece has, in fact, been booming since ancient times, beginning with the Roman invasion. The Roman Empire became heavily influenced by Greek art, philosophy and science, triggering many Roman citizens to visit the cultural centres of Athens, Thebes and Corinth. In the 20th century, holidaymakers continue to flock to Greece’s coastlines to soak up the balmy sunshine and swim in the cool azure waters.

International tourism is more important to Greece than ever in the face of recent economic and political turmoil. There’s a huge range of great value holidays to Greece with Cosmos available in 2012, across both the mainland and the Greek islands. In a series of monthly blog posts, Cosmos continues to take a closer look at the top sights and attractions to enjoy in this fascinating country.

The Cosmos Guide to Greece commenced in March and will run until June, with a focus on how to discover the real country behind the usual tourist traps. Greece is a land of contrasts, and offers an unforgettable experience for holidaymakers of all tastes and ages. From the ancient grandeur of Delphi to the pulsing nightlife of Mykonos, there’s a kaleidoscope of cultural sights to explore and activities to enjoy.

The March Cosmos Guide to Greece took a whirlwind tour of the Greek islands, revealing some inside tips to making the most of these Mediterranean hotspots. Blissful sunbathing on Crete, tranquil relaxation on sunny Santorini, exhilarating water sports on Kos, and dusk ’til dawn parties in Zante – there’s a Greek holiday to suit everyone.

In April, the Guide to Greece turned its attention to the mouth-watering menus to be found across the country’s culinary landscape. From the internationally acclaimed Corfiote cuisine of chef Ettore Bottrini, to family-run tavernas hiding in the cobbled streets of traditional fishing villages, the guide looked at the most authentic Greek dining options for discerning visitors. Self-catering holidaymakers were given a detailed guide on how to source local Greek produce in the April edition, revealing details of family friendly organic farms, award-winning wineries and grand indoor markets.

Operating for over 50 years, Cosmos Holidays is one of the oldest and best established brands in UK tour operating, and provides holidays to over 780,000 customers in 65 destinations annually.
