Katherine Jenkins, the fastest-selling female opera singer ever, will assist World Travel Market to launch a major new global responsible tourism initiative for 2007 which organisers describe as both “inspirational and ambitious”.

The initiative – currently under wraps – will form a major international theme at the opening ceremony.

“We asked Katherine to help us because in a short time, she has become a living inspiration to millions of people throughout the world”, said Fiona Jeffery, World Travel Market’s managing director.

“World Travel Market has been at the vanguard of environmental and responsible tourism for the past 13 years. Environmental Awareness Day, now called Responsible Tourism Day, which takes place on the Wednesday of World Travel Market, has proved to be one of the most successful days of the event with a combination of debates, presentations, seminars and awards. We feel the time has now come for us to build on its established success by taking responsible tourism on to a new global dimension for business. We hope this initiative will touch everyone working in the global travel and tourism industry – from government level to the most junior member of staff working for a travel company – whether they are able to attend World Travel Market or not. We wanted it to be inspirational, ambitious and compelling and one that will bring the international travel and tourism industry together in a universal way that has never been achieved before,” added Jeffery.

The international singer from Wales, who signed the biggest deal in UK classical recording history and has twice won the Best Album of the Year at the Classical Brits, will sing and formally open World Travel Market. Additionally, she will speak about the new initiative. She has been likened to a young Maria Callas.

The beautiful 23-year-old mezzo-soprano, who has sung for HRH Queen Elizabeth II as well as at Live 8 in Berlin, the G8 in Scotland and at the Sydney Opera House, is known for her classical versions of well known pop songs. For example one of her blockbuster songs is her classical version of ‘I Will Always Love You’ translated into Italian, a global hit for Whitney Houston and written by Dolly Parton.
