Greece to double yacht berths by 2005

An ambitious expansion plan for yacht berths at Greek marina<.>s is underway. According to the government plan, available yacht berths at Greek marinas and ports will increase from today`s total of 7,000 to 15,500 by 2005.

The first phase of the plan foresees an additional 3,500 berths within the next three years. Much of the increase will come from private sector investment. The Greek government is ready to call for bids on the long-term lease of state-owned marinas (43-year leases) in return for base rental fees and expansion investment plans.

A recent study by Global View, which was commissioned by the Greek government, shows the country has 61 ports with basic marine infrastructure. Most are capable of creating up to 80 yacht berths….
