The survey on travel website takethefamily.com found that 48% of families would like to escape the British winter and head for some festive sun. Christmas coincides with high season sunshine in firm family favourite destinations such as the Caribbean, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

But the traditional British Christmas – eating, drinking and chilling out on the sofa watching classic movies – proved more popular than a family ski trip.

33% of parents said they`d rather stay at home with the mother-in-law than take on the moguls. Only 19% said they fancied Christmas on the slopes.

It looks like most parents want Hot, Hot, Hot this year as well as a bit of Ho, Ho, Ho, said takethefamily managing director Lucy Ace.

More and more travel companies are tailoring Christmas winter sun packages towards families – with interconnecting rooms plus loads of well-organised fun for the kids. And Father Christmas always visits little ones wherever they are – even in the Caribbean. Skiing with kids is a booming market, added Lucy Ace. But families seem to prefer to leave their ski trips to the New Year and particularly February Half Term.

A lot of parents with young children obviously still like a traditional Christmas at home with all the trimmings. Or heading to a cosy British hotel and letting them take the strain of preparing all the food and drink.
