Spanish Tourist Office reports increase in international arrivals

Spanish Tourist Office during the World Travel Market, WTM<.> reports increase in international arrivals in the country, not only for the nine months up to the end of September this year, but also for the month of September 2001.



Especially, during the nine months up to the end of September this year, over 40 million tourists have visited Spain from all over the world. This is an increase of 4,3% (1.6 million tourists) on the same period as last year. The British market, which has increased by 5% on the same period last year, remains the biggest market to Spain, with 28% of the total market.



For the month of September 2001 the total increase of the international arrival was 8%. On the other hand, the international arrivals in Madrid decreased 4.67%, as well as in Castilla Leon. Balearic and Canary Islands showed an increase of 8.72% and 2.04% respectively.



In World Travel Market 2001, Turespana stand covered 1.030sqm plus a number of autonomous regions, which will be taking their own stands. For example, Catalonia had a stand of 110sqm, the Balearic Islands 72sqm, Gran Canaria 65sqm, and Tenerife 90sqm. The total number of autonomous regions was 19, as well as almost 90 private companies including hotel chains, travel agencies, the Parador chain of hotels and some of the main transport companies in Spain – RENFE (national railway), Transmediaterranea (ferries) and Iberia Airlines.
