The northern Greek prefecture of Xanthi<.> is making slow but steady progress toward a passive form of tourism development. Focusing on alternative forms of tourism such as walking tours, sports trips and convention organisation, public officials and private investors are working together to promote the area`s natural beauty, traditions, customs, beliefs and long history.

These efforts form part of a series of tourist infrastructure and development works falling under the Leader programme, which include new accommodation units and an information bureau. The aim is to create a network of services catering to the needs of every visitor while retaining a sense of balance in tourism development on a social, cultural and environment level. Local entrepreneurs are involved in the project which includes the publication of high quality tourist guides, promotion of the area`s attractions, creation of themed trips and services for the disabled.

Xanthi prefecture`s development agency heads the effort which also serves to highlight and protect wetlands whose uniqueness have been acknowledged by international organisations. More than 300 species of birds depend on the wetlands for their survival while wolves and jackals exist in small numbers.

A virtual viewing system is operating at the Nestos river which enables visitors to zoom in on various parts of the waterway using three cameras. A website – www.ectc.com.gr/nestos – has been established to offer further details.
