Flamingo fun in Larnaka, Cyprus this summer

The campaign entitled ‘They always come back’ features the famous mascot of the region, the Great Flamingo chosen because of the flamingo’s enduring love affair with Larnaka, where they can be seen at Voroklini Lake and Larnaka Salt Lake between March and November (unusually, this year two flamingos have stayed a little longer and are still in Larnaka).

Holidaymakers are invited to engage in fun new campaign launched by Larnaca Tourism this summer and take a ‘selfie’ with one of nine cut-out flamingos that have been placed close to popular attractions throughout the region.

The nine cut-out flamingos can be found at places where people can partake in various activities, showcasing the wide appeal of the region for the many visitors that return each year.

These include diving at the Zenobia Wreck; a cocktail and dancing at Mckenzie; a relaxing coffee at Foinikoudes promenade; a cycle ride through Pervolia; watersports and sunbathing on the beaches of Pyla and Voroklini; kitesurfing in Kiti, and birdwatching at Voroklini Lake and Larnaka Salt Lake.

Larnaka Salt Lake is the place to see thousands of pink flamingos during the winter as the lake fills and attracts migrating birds who take refuge here. The most basic element of the food chain in the lakes’ ecosystem is a small brine shrimp. When flamingos and other water birds are unable to find the shrimp, they desert the salt lakes and continue their journey by travelling south towards Africa.

As well as birdwatching Larnaka offers many options for holidaymakers year-round from activities such as diving, cycling, walking, to more relaxing sunbathing on glorious beaches, discovering the picturesque villages, having spa treatments and enjoying the fantastic food and wine in the region.

A great place to stay is the recently renovated and refurbished, 4-star Palm Beach & Bungalows, located on the coast just outside of Larnaka, a short 18 minute transfer from the island’s main airport. Rooms start from £105 per room per night for a garden view room for two and including breakfast in July. For adults only, check out the 5-star Ciao Stelio Deluxe Hotel which is close to fashionable McKenzie Beach and combines the charm of a private house with the luxury of a 5-star hotel with rooms from £168 per night. To indulge consider a stay at the 17-room heritage-listed building that is Lokàl, a new boutique hotel in the heart of Larnaka town and prices from £130 per room per night in July.
