Global Summer Trends 2017 by trivago

Reykjavík, Iceland.

The number one trending destination for 2017 is Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. This is the destination that has shown the greatest increase in searches over the past two years.

DUSSELDORF – This year, trivago.co.uk reveals 2017's worldwide trending destinations as part of their annual Global Summer Trends research.

Using exclusive price data from the past two years on trivago platforms around the world, trivago has identified the destinations that have seen the largest increase in popularity over this period.

The number one trending destination for 2017 is Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. This is the destination that has shown the greatest increase in searches over the past two years.

This is followed by Cuba’s Varadero, coming in at number two and ranking higher than the country’s capital, Havana.

The one country to feature twice in the list is Spain. Both destinations are located in the Southeastern Alicante province: the eponymous town of Alicante coming in at number four and the nearby Torrevieja at ten.

European destinations make up 50% of the results: Iceland, Turkey, Spain and Croatia are the four European countries making the top list.

One of the smallest destinations in the top ten is Crikvenica on Croatia's Adriatic coast, which is ninth in the ranking.

Trending Destinations for 2017: The Top 10

1. Reykjavík, Iceland
2. Varadero, Cuba
3. Fethiye, Turkey
4. Alicante, Spain
5. Malacca, Malaysia
6. Cartagena, Colombia
7. Cancun, Mexico
8. Cape Town, South Africa
9. Crikvenica, Croatia
10. Torrevieja, Spain

Eleanor Kutylowski, External Relations: "Even though most of the destinations in the top ten offer sunshine and sandy beaches, the top spot for 2017 is taken by Iceland’s Reykjavik, an alternative to the traditional summer beach holiday.

Europe is the place to be this year, with European destinations making up half of the top ten. For those looking to venture abroad, these destinations are perfect for a short haul break, however with most UK travellers choosing to holiday for an average of 7 days, the long-haul options outside of the continent are set to be just as popular."

Alicante, a longstanding popular choice for the Brits is no longer a secret of ours; as the fourth most trending destination it is evident that travellers worldwide have started to pick up on its appeal.

A great resource for those yet to book their summer holiday, this top list can help Brits pick out a trending destination that has been tried and tested by travellers worldwide.’
