With Dubai and the Middle East basking in year round sunshine – and meteorologists forecasting even hotter climates in years to come – the Gate Shade is one of several inventions displaying at The Leisure Show aimed at helping residents and visiting tourists keep cool outdoors.
DUBAI, UAE – The winner of one of the design world’s most prestigious international awards is to unveil his latest cutting edge sun shading technology exclusively in Dubai this month.
Swiss born artist Nicolas Thomkins – recipient of the much-coveted Red Dot Design Best of the Best Award – has devised the Gate Shade outdoor sun shield: a sleek stainless steel arch that houses two large canopies which, when extended at the touch of a button, provide 30sqm of shelter from the sun’s rays.
Outdoor shading specialists Unosider will be showcasing the streamlined modern structure at The Leisure Show Dubai, taking place between September 17 and 19 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (Hall 1).
Mahan Pourghorban, General Manager at Unosider Middle East, raved about the opportunities the design offers buyers in the region. The fabric shelter’s award-winning designer – currently the brains behind patio furniture at much acclaimed outdoor seating specialists Higold Europe – commented: “Gate Shade offers shade in a puristic, architectural way. Luxurious outdoor furniture is relatively new to all of us. Modern technologies and weather resistant materials allow designers to think of structures which couldn’t be manufactured some decades ago.
“The awareness for comfortable and functional outdoor furniture and accessories has become a major factor in the furniture world. Consumers are willing to spend more for garden furniture than for indoor.”

It will be joined on site by the team from HydroCool Advanced Outdoor Systems, who will be presenting the HydroShower; a streetlamp shaped mist vent that keeps pathways, beach resorts, pool areas or outdoor seating spots chilled with a continuous blanket of refreshing spray.
HydroCool will also be exhibiting the HydroBlast motorised fan, designed to deliver maximum cool air flow even in the world’s hottest climates.
