MIA finishes 2015 with 44 million passengers, rings in New Year with new single-day record

Through November, MIA was already having its best year ever for passenger growth, with a 9.2-percent increase and 40.3 million passengers at that point. December added another four million passengers to the airport’s year-end total.

MIAMI – On December 31, Miami International Airport closed out 2015 in grand fashion by welcoming its 44-millionth passenger of 2015, shattering its previous annual record of 40.9 million set in 2014. MIA kicked off 2016 with more statistical fireworks when it set a new single-day passenger record of 159,217 on January 2, which topped the previous record of 155,620 set just two weeks prior on December 19.

“Congratulations to the dedicated employees at MIA for having their best year ever in passenger traffic,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “From start to finish, 2015 was a year of tremendous achievements at our County’s largest economic engine, and the entire community should be extremely proud of what they have accomplished.”

Through November, MIA was already having its best year ever for passenger growth, with a 9.2-percent increase and 40.3 million passengers at that point. December added another four million passengers to the airport’s year-end total, with the last 10 days of the month seeing 1.5 million passengers travel through the global gateway. The weekend before Christmas Day also saw some of MIA’s busiest days of the year, with 147,841 travelers on December 18, 155,620 on December 19, and 147,856 on December 20. A report of final, audited 2015 statistics will be released later this month.

“These record-setting numbers were exclamation points on another amazing year at MIA,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. Gonzalez. “Adding three million more passengers in 2015 means a huge influx of business revenue and job creation for our local tourism industry. This year, we expect to remain on an upward trend with even more new international airlines and routes starting service, as well as our existing carriers continuing to flourish. We look forward to yet another record-breaking year at MIA.”
