PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. – Sawgrass Country Club announced the completion of a multi-million dollar renovation of its 27 holes of championship golf. A ribbon cutting on the South course took place on October 28, 2015 to celebrate the completion of the three year project.
The 27 hole golf course was renovated as part of the club’s Master Golf Course Plan to refurbish the golf course infrastructure. All the fairways, tees and bunkers were included in the project. Substantial improvement work was also completed on bridges, drainage, cart paths, bulkheads and the irrigation system. A greens renovation is planned for the future.
“This commitment to our Master Golf Course Plan demonstrates our commitment to providing an exceptional golf course that is considered amongst the best in the nation,” said Barry McDonald, Sawgrass Country Club general manager. “We want Sawgrass Country Club to continue to be the first choice for those seeking a high value private club experience.” Sawgrass Country Club formerly hosted The Players Championship tournament from 1977 to 1981 prior to the tournament moving to its present location. The course has consistently been ranked by Golf Digest as one of the top 100 golf courses.
Sawgrass Country Club partnered with golf course architect, Robert Walker to complete the design and manage the East and West course project. Walker has vast experience in course design and project management. He was also a protege of Ed Seay, the original course architect from Arnold Palmer Design Company during the construction of the club’s original East / West layout. MacCurrach Golf Construction completed the construction work on the entire 27 hole project.
