TUI is growing in Mexico

Mexico is the largest long-haul destination for TUI investments.

HANOVER – Growth in tourism and investments from TUI Group have made a significant contribution to strengthening economic relations between Germany and Mexico. Iris Gleicke, Secretary of State in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Gerardo Corona, Secretary of State for Innovation and Tourism Development at the Mexican Ministry for Tourism, Rogelio Granguillhome, Ambassador of the United Mexican States and the tourism ministers of the Mexican states of Veracruz and Chiapas visited TUI Group’s Berlin Corporate Office to hear TUI’s plans for Mexico first-hand from Thomas Ellerbeck, Member of the Group Executive Committee at TUI Group. “Mexico is now the long haul destination enjoying the largest investment by TUI. This year alone, our RIU subsidiary is planning to open two new hotels in Mexico,” said Thomas Ellerbeck. One of the hotels is a RIU Palace Hotel on the Costa Mujeres in Cancun, and the second is currently under construction at Baja California on the Mexican Pacific coast. TUI Group plans to increase the number of its hotels in Mexico from currently 18 to 20 by the end year. The world’s leading travel company plans to extend its Mexican portfolio to cater to around one million guests every year.

“We’re very pleased that the tourism industry is stepping up its involvement in Mexico because it is strengthening our very good bilateral economic relationship. Tourism is the key to growth and prosperity for the local population, and the tourism industry’s function in our development is becoming increasingly significant," commented Iris Gleicke. “Mexican tourism can only continue to grow if we have a good and dependable global framework and solid trade relations,” emphasised Gleicke.

“Investments by TUI and RIU are directly benefitting people in Mexico because they're creating thousands of new jobs. We're also delighted that TUI is extending its holiday portfolio along the Pacific coast and the attractive destination of Los Cabos to make the region accessible to more European guests,” said Gerado Corona.

With regards to TUI’s Hotel & Resorts business, Mexico is the fifth largest destination after Spain, Egypt, Greece and Turkey. It is also the most important long haul destination for this segment, followed by the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.
