TUI Travel’s worldwide beach clean

Colleagues from across the Group will unite throughout July to clean up beaches in a range of destinations including Mexico, Greece, Turkey and even a reef clean in Egypt.

LONDON – TUI Travel PLC is organising a series of Big Holiday Beach Clean events worldwide this July – kicking off with volunteers from teams across TUI Travel, ABTA and AITO hitting Brighton beach to support Make Holidays Greener Month, the Travel Foundation’s annual campaign to celebrate greener holidays.

Colleagues from across the Group will unite throughout July to clean up beaches in a range of destinations including Mexico, Greece, Turkey and even a reef clean in Egypt. Customers across destinations will be encouraged to take part, raising awareness of the issues of sustainability in destinations.

6.4 million tonnes of marine litter enters the world’s oceans each year, which not only threatens wildlife, but also human health, communities and economies around the world.

The purpose is to encourage the local authorities to keep the beaches clean, and to build understanding of the simple steps that everyone can take to protect the environment and local wildlife. The rubbish collected will be analysed to help better understand the scale of the problem and put greater solutions in place.

Thomson and First Choice, two of TUI Travel’s UK brands, will also be promoting the campaign throughout July, highlighting the campaign and the issues it is raising at various points throughout the customer journey, including in stores, on aircraft, and in destinations.

Jane Ashton, Group Director of Sustainable Development at TUI Travel, said, “Make Holidays Greener month is a great way to raise awareness of the simple steps we all can take to protect the environment and wildlife. Collaboration in sustainable development is fundamental to the future viability of the destinations in which we operate – together, we are stronger.”
