Hotwire reveals popular Canadian Thanksgiving getaways

List of the Top 10 most popular destinations shows Canada's biggest cities continue to dominate with US border cities growing in popularity.

SAN FRANCISCO – Hotwire.com announced the top 10 most popular destinations Canadian travellers are visiting over the Thanksgiving weekend.  Big Canadian cities like Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver continue to appear as some of the most popular destinations on this year’s list.  Meanwhile, U.S. cities like New York, Las Vegas and Minneapolis – which are particularly good values when Canadian and U.S. currencies are on par – are increasing in popularity.

Compared to last year’s list, New York (number one on the list), Las Vegas (number five) and Minneapolis (number six), all moved up from second, seventh and eighth, respectively. Toronto was unseated from the most popular destination in 2011 and moves down to number three this year, but with Montreal moving up from third to second and Vancouver holding at fourth place, Canadian cities still took three of the top four spots. Halifax and Ottawa, which were on last year’s list, were replaced with two Californian destinations – San Francisco and Seattle.

Thanksgiving is about family, friends and food, and for Canadians, it can also be a chance to get away,” said Pierre-Etienne Chartier, vice president of the Hotwire Group. “We’ve seen American cities grow in popularity this year and having an even exchange rate allows us to get a little more for our money in destinations that are usually more expensive. Thanksgiving also falls during shoulder season, when you can typically find some good values, decent weather and fewer crowds.”
