Volotea launches a new base in Bilbao

An aircraft will be based at La Paloma airport creating fifty direct jobs. Vienna, Malta, Palermo and Malaga are the new routes to be operated.

BILBAO – Volotea, the airline of mid and small sized European cities, has launched a new base in Bilbao. This new base will allow a significant increase of operations and will generate an important job creation in Bizkaia.

Volotea has inaugurated this morning its new base in Bilbao, where an aircraft will be permanently based to allow a significant increase in routes and frequencies. The event, presented by Lazaro Ros, Director General and Co-founder of Volotea, has been supported by the main institutions in Bizkaia.

Javier de Andres, Delegado del Gobierno in the Basque Country, Covadonga Aldamiz-Echevarria, Subdelegada del Gobierno in the Basque Country, Vicente Reyes, Diputado Foral of Transport; Mercedes Rodriguez, Director of Tourism of Bilbao Town Council; Maria Paz Irastorza, Director de Commerce of Bizkaia Chamber of Commerce and Cristina Echeverria, Director of Bilbao airport, all welcomed the importance of this opening.

Previously, a Boeing 717 has been visited by main local media invited to the celebration. The event has ended with an aurresku, performance, the traditional dancing to celebrate and honour the opening of operations.

This year, Volotea will offer more than 173,000 seats to fly from/to Bilbao, multiplying by two the line-up of destinations by adding four new routes. Vienna, Malta, Palermo and Malaga will join Ibiza, Majorca, Seville and Venice. All the international destinations in the offer are exclusive from Bilbao airport.

En 2017, Volotea carried more than 61,000 passengers from Bilbao with a 92% average seat load and a recommendation rate of 87.5%.

“We are proud to launch our new base in Bilbao and pleased to get this warm welcome from the main local institutions. Last year we achieved an excellent reception to our offer, so this year we have increased our capacity adding also four new destinations, out of which three are exclusive international routes. This will help us to round up the existing offer at the same time as adding up to 100,000 seats to the airport, allowing to enhance the touristic and business destination line-up with a direct connection from Bizkaia’s capital. Opening La Paloma base will make Bilbao, a top touristic hub in 2018, closer to new markets and create fifty new jobs”, Carlos Munoz Beraza, Founder and CEO of Volotea stated.
