Antarctica Expert reveals solo travellers are increasingly heading to earth’s most remote continent

Antarctica Cruises

There has been a recent spike in searches for single-traveler flights between 2022 and 2023, which have risen by 36%, according to data, which may suggest solo travel is increasingly on people’s radars now.

According to Antarctica Cruises inquiries for solo travel to Antarctica have roughly doubled this 2023 compared to previous years, with 50% of all inquiries to the White Continent being made by travellers hoping to venture there alone.

Solo travel has been on the rise in recent years, with statistics from this year revealing that over one in ten travellers are travelling alone.

Off-grid travel has been on the rise this year as well, with research revealing that a large portion (55%) of travellers are in search of having off-grid holidays where they can escape from reality.

So, we might expect that even more travellers are in search of remote and unique experiences in far-flung destinations across the world, with many of these individuals planning to have these solo.

Jeremy Clubb is the Founder of Antarctica Cruises, an Antarctica expedition cruise specialist, and has shared his insight on how interest in solo travel has been rising to one of the world’s most remote destinations:

“We’ve noticed that roughly 50% of our total inquiries this year have been from solo travellers, up from approximately 25% historically. This is a staggering increase, undoubtedly showcasing that solo travellers, more than ever, are becoming more intrepid in their quest for the most far-flung and unique experiences that our natural world has to offer.

“Google search data seems to support this. In the past two years alone we’ve seen worldwide searches for ‘Antarctica cruise’ have increased 333%, highlighting just how many more people are keen to venture to this untouched corner of the globe. Searches for ‘solo Antarctica’ have similarly increased, up 100% for the same period, further confirming that the White Continent has caught the attention of keen solo travellers in search of information about either the possibility, logistics, or cost associated with visiting Antarctica on their own.

“I’d proffer this is partly attributable to the current climate issues we are seeing which has undoubtedly brought the spotlight on Antarctica, as well as the array of inspiring wildlife documentaries on our screens these days. We’ve also seen an increase in awareness around the ability to share cabins with like-minded travellers on Antarctic cruises to avoid paying any prohibitively expensive single supplements. But by far the biggest factor has to be the ‘luxury adventure’ appeal of the latest fleet of state-of-the-art expedition vessels now sailing the polar regions. These sleek, ice-strengthened ships are now offering hitherto unseen levels of comfort, even in the wildest realms imaginable.”
